Email of the day on charts of P/E ratios

Do we have any charts in the library that charts major indices price/earnings ratios please? Thanks very much

Thank you for a question that comes up from time to time. Unfortunately Bloomberg does not “tickerise” this data so we do not get it in our feed. As a result we do not have P/E charts in the Chart Library.

However here are screen grabs of historic P/Es for

The S&P500

Nasdaq-100

Europe STOXX Index

FTSE-100

The problem with looking at these charts is that the data spikes, around periods of market stress, are anomalies due to a missed quarter of earnings that soon wash out but disrupt the scale. This is one of the reasons fundamental analysts prefer cyclically adjusted P/Es.
