"I happened upon the following animated GIF on a HFT related forum. It purports to show the rise of the algorithmic machines since 2007. Things get rather frantic in the second half of 2011, which says quite a lot.

This is the first time-sequenced visual depicting the increasing influence of HFT that I have seen. I recommend watching it all the way through because a degree of mayhem occurs in 2011, as you will recall. If you click inside the GIF you will also find some discussion.
