On creating longer-term charts

"I enjoyed studying your presentation, thank you for posting it. Can you tell me where I can find the graphs featuring prices going back to the 1970s that you included in your PDF?"

David Fuller's view

Yes, and you can create them in the Chart Library, where we have that much historic data, and save the long-term settings. Follow this procedure: 1) bring up a chart of the S&P 500 or any other instrument of interest; 2) click on the 'Charting' link in the charcoal tool bar above each graph and this will open a Charting Settings window; 3) click on 'Sample' and select the monthly or quarterly setting for long-term charts; 4) where you see 'Period', click on the chevron and select '50 Years (max); 5) click for 'Log Scale' if you wish; 6) click on 'Apply'; 7) the chart will appear; 8) click on 'Add to Favourites' link in the tool bar.

The good news is that this procedure will be a lot easier when our new Chart Library is available on the new FT Money website next month.
